Synopsis

Few cartoonists have refined the art of telling a complete story in one comic book like Stan Sakai. The modern master of the done-in-one has done it again with November's installment of the long-running series Usagi Yojimbo. Usagi's sensei, Katsuichi, has led a remarkable life, but some of his choices would leave many samurai questioning his judgment. "Bells" recounts a formative event in young Katsuichi's life when, as a student, he courted the daughter of the master of a rival sword school. Katsuichi's pursuit of the girl does not sit well with Ikyu, the proud senior instructor who intends to marry her and inherit her family's school! With his public image threatened and his intent with the girl contested, Ikyu challenges the upstart Katshuichi to a duel, only to have Katsuichi decline the invitation. Facing public disgrace, and shouldering his new reputation as a coward, Katsuichi eventually earns the title of "The Master." What happened that would allow such a title to be bestowed upon the misunderstood warrior? Read Usagi Yojimbo #71 to find out!
